The MAIH ZOOG (Shield, also Mai Sawk, Mai Sok or Grarock Grataeh) is one of the most devastating and versatile weapons a PAHUYUTH student may choose to learn.
Originally used as some kind of multitool or arm extension, ancient free warriors (PAHUYUTH) came up with the idea to use it as a weapon. Loosely attached to the forearms it provides excellent defense capabilities against almost any kind of melee weapon. The metal bolts at the front protect the hands and inflict enormous amounts of blunt damage. It can also be ‘shot’ forward and be wielded like a hand-axe or be used as a hook.
Legends tell that small groups of PAHUYUTH warriors using MAIH ZOOG were called in when two armies found themselves in a lockdown position. Attacking from the flank, they paved their way through the battlefield. In many cases this tactic tipped the tide of the battle or ended it once and for all.
MAIH ZOOG (Shield) is an armed PAHUYUTH discipline, that deals with the art of shield fighting.
GRABONG (Quarterstaff) is an armed PAHUYUTH discipline, that deals with the art of long staff fighting.
Encounters between quarterstaff (GRABONG) and shield (MAIH ZOOG) are traditionally referred to as “Cobra vs. Mongoose”-fights (Panporn Nguhau / Grarock Gradeau).
MAIH ZOOG, GRABONG and other PAHUYUTH weapon fighting methods were used on ancient battlefields and should not be confused with Krabi Krabong, which was invented much later (under King Rama II, 1767-1824 A.D.) with the sole intention of “entertainment, sport and presentation” in mind.
