This is a video I am upgrading my 90′s tilt column to accept a C6 Corvette style GM or similar steering wheel. All the parts can be 100% swapped back to stock.
Tools required:
Universal bolt puller / Wheel Puller $14 harbor freight #62620
Steering wheel lock plate remover $20 #27044
Small pick set
long flat head screwdriver
Pivot Pin Remover $10 #39564806520 (or make own with 8/32 bolt and large assorted washers and socket)
Socket set
Philips screwdrivers
Torx sockets
Roll pin punch
Pointed punch
hammer
Dremel tool with cutting wheel (for CS modification only)
small flat head to pop out 3 spoke air bag cover (lock pins on left and right inside rear cover holes)
As far as I know this works on all the Saginaw tilt columns starting in the 80′s on up. I have seen it done on S10′s C5′s, Cavaliers etc.. Should fit everything 80s gm and up.
Parts needed:
GM PN 26074286 (Upper column shaft) Replaces original to updated 07-14 ish wheels. check part number interchange for proper parts vehicle list.
Steering wheel and air bag:
C6 Corvette, 10+ Camaro, Cobalt, Saturn, Express, Impala, Lacrosse, Cadillac, Monte Carlo, Bonneville, ETC. As long as the shaft part number fits the original donor car the wheel and air bag can be fitted.
Air bag inflator I used for the standard 3 spoke Corporate wheel was for an 04 Silverado 2500 HD. They offered this single bag into the 07′s as the “classic” body trucks. If you are not doing a 3 spoke wheel you will have to figure out what bag would work or you can always disable the air bag with an appropriate resistor (usually a 1.5 to 2 ohm resistor)
Clock spring. This will be specific to your car for my needs I went with the discontinued 02 Fbody CS with Radio control function I will wire up for separate auxiliary controls.
Note for my install the wheel would pinch the clock spring wires because the wires come out around the 4:00 position and the 3 spoke design has a hole at the 6:00. I had to carefully dremel some of the connector body and snap it off to allow for a tighter wire bend with the CS I used. After that I could snug the wheel on.
One thing I have noticed is that the wheel top splines are offset by a tooth compared to my stock upper shaft. The wheel was centered at about the 1:00 position. A small equal toe adjustment can be made to correct this. Or have it aligned.
If you clock spring has lost the center home position you can delicately rotate it lock to lock while CS is removed from column. Be careful as the ribbon cable inside can break even under hand torque.
When the pivot pins go back in be sure to steak them in place with a punch.
According to GM, handle air bags with caution, Disconnect the battery for 20 minutes before removing or working on air bag systems. (DERM Diagnostic energy reserve module needs to discharge) store with bag side up, never put anything on top of bag that you dont want launched (especially knives). Static discharge from handling may be possible to ignite the bag. Never work on air bag systems in the radius of an operating Tesla coil or electric type Pokemon.
