ASTM A193

Scope

Originally approved in 1936, this specification is heavily utilized in petroleum and chemical construction applications.  The ASTM standard covers alloy steel and stainless steel bolting materials for high temperature service. This specification includes fasteners intended for use in pressure vessels, valves, flanges, and fittings. Although, this material is often available in national coarse (UNC) thread pitches, if being used in traditional applications, threads are specified 8 threads per inch (tpi) for diameters above one inch.

Below is a basic summary of a few of the common grades. ASTM A193 covers a number of other standard specifications not covered in this description including B5, B6, and B16.

Grades

B7 Alloy steel, AISI 4140/4142 quenched and tempered
B8 Class 1 Stainless steel, AISI 304, carbide solution treated.
B8M Class 1 Stainless steel, AISI 316, carbide solution treated.
B8 Class 2 Stainless steel, AISI 304, carbide solution treated, strain hardened
B8M Class 2 Stainless steel, AISI 316, carbide solution treated, strain hardened

Start a new Part file in SolidWorks.
Activate the ‘Revolved Boss/Base’ tool from the (Features toolbar) and select the Front Plane in the design window.
Draw the sketch profile by using the line and Offset Entities tool with the dimensions displayed onwards.
Exit from the sketching environment and select the axis line to create the revolve feature.
Change the model color to polished steel.
Save the part file with the name BearingLocknut Washer.
Activate the ‘Extruded Cut’ tool and select the bottom face of part.
Draw the sketch as displayed along with the dimensions.
The sketch is now Fully Defined, exit from the sketch, the Extrude Cute command is automatically activated.
Right click in the design window and choose ‘Through All’ option.
Open the visibility of temporary axis of the part.
Activate the ‘Circular Pattern’ tool and select the Cut-Extrude1 in the graphics area.
Define Axis of the pattern and Number of Instances as 13 in the specified input boxes.
Click Ok to execute the ‘Circular Pattern’ tool.
Activate Extrude Boss/Boss Feature and define the sketch plane for creating the sketch profile, as we did earlier.
Finish the sketch to activate the Extrude command.
Right click in the design window and choose ‘Mid Plane’ option, define the depth and execute command.
Add the fillets on the top and rear edge of the Boss-Extrude-1 feature as displayed.

Enerpac Power in action! Loosing these large cap screws on this large cylinder repair job required controlled brute force!
Enerpac W4000 Series low profile Tools with M27mm hex reducer got the job done quickly and effectively. The tighten was breeze to carry out – knowing cap bolts had been torqued up correctly using calibrated tooling. Great for peace of mind.
