Installing clipless cleats correctly is vital to getting the most out of your pedals. Plus the type of clipless pedal that you choose will influence the type of shoe and vice versa, due to the attachment options on the sole of each shoe. Road shoes have smooth, rigid soles with both 2-bolt patterns for mountain bike cleats and 3-bolt patterns for road cleats. Mountain shoes have a rigid rubber sole with a recessed 2-bolt pattern for cleat attachment. A general rule of thumb is to center the cleat with the balls of the feet so that they are over the pedal axle.
