Hey guys! I’m back to share another last minute DIY gift–and yes this can definitely be a last minute gift! No mall shopping required!
If you have someone in your life who’s on the DIY-side themselves, they’ll get a kick out of this nuts and bolts chess set (and if they don’t play chess, maybe it will inspire them to learn)!
Things you’ll need:
(From Home Depot)
Nuts & bolts (see below)
Tiles (I used a 10×10, cut down to an 8×8)
Spray paint (I used a hammered gold, and a hammered black)
Stain
Gorilla Glue or Gorilla Epoxy
(From Michael’s)
Unfinished cigar box
Felt
Hot glue
Foam brushes
Chess pieces:
**To keep things easy, I used all quarter-inch nuts and bolts. The brand I used was Everbilt.**
Pawns (16 each) – 3/4-inch Phillips flat-head screw (body), 1/4-inch hex nut (skirt), cap nuts (top)
Knights (4 each) – 1 1/4-inch Phillips flat-head screw (body), (2) 1/4-inch hex nuts (top)
Bishops (4 each) – 2-inch eye bolts (body), 1/4-inch washers (skirt), 1/4-inch hex nut (base)
Rooks (4 each) – 1 1/2-inch Phillips flat-head screw (body), 1/4-inch wing nut (arm), 1/4-inch hex nut + 1/4-inch washer + 1/4 square nut (top)
Queens (2 each) – 2-inch Phillips flat-head screw, 1/4-inch washer + 1/4-inch hex nut + 1/4-inch washer (skirt), 1/4-inch wing nut (arm), 1/4-inch castle nut (top)
Kings (2 each) – 2 1/2-inch Phillips flat-head screw, 1/4-inch hex nut + 1/4-inch washer (skirt), 1/4-inch hex nut + 1/4-inch washer + 1/4-inch hex nut (mid-section), 1/4-inch wing nut (arm), 1/4-inch castle nut (top)
