Morgan Silver Dollars are an excellent way to own a piece of history, while concurrently investing in the physical precious metal silver. Morgan Silver Dollars are composed of 90% silver and 10% copper. They weigh 26.73 grams. This equates to approximately .7734 Troy ounces of silver and approximately .1 ounce of copper per coin. Some dates and mint marks carry a very high numismatic (“collector”) premium over spot. This value can go even higher, if the coin is in mint state condition. Even circulated “junk silver” Morgan Silver Dollars should likely be valued at or slightly above the spot price of silver due to their silver content plus collectibility. Morgan Silver Dollars are becoming harder to obtain nowadays due to the fact that an abundance of common dates were melted down and coin collectors and investors are hoarding the more collectible coins.
