More info at https://www.planetz.com/toothpick-trick-for-loose-screws. In this short video, I demonstrate a simple technique using a toothpick to fix the loose tuner screws on a guitar. When you have a screw that just spins freely in the hole, it won’t tighten because the wood fibers in the hole are stripped out and no longer gripping the screw threads. Use one or more toothpicks to fill the hole and cut them off flush – no glue necessary – and the screws will now tighten perfectly. The soft wood of the toothpick makes the perfect filler.
