Macadamias Are Tough Nuts to Crack
Macadamias are very tough trees and, once established, can be amazingly drought-resistant. If planted under shelter trees, they can also survive quite heavy frosts. They certainly need protection from heavy frost, when very small, and do better in a sunny sheltered position like under a large evergreen. They will survive the heat, dryness and cold; but will not grow very fast or produce nuts without lots of extra water in summer. It’s interesting to know, though, that a neglected macadamia can survive for decades–and that included long years of drought and water restrictions.
